Bela Lugosi in Europe
Bela Lugosi was born on October 20, 1882, in Lugos, Hungary. The son of a strict father, he ran away at the age of eleven. He spent some time working as a miner, but eventually landed bit parts in plays. Unsuccessful in this attempt, he attended school briefly and worked other odd jobs before again taking the stage—this time more successfully.
He was accepted into a theatrical school, and eventually earned top billing in several plays. He enlisted in the Hungarian army in 1914. Some accounts state that he was wounded three times and others suggest that he pretended to be mentally ill to get out of the army. Either way, he was discharged in 1916.
He married the first of five wives in 1917. It was also about this time that he started to appear in films. Because of his political inclinations, Bela Lugosi was forced to flee to Germany, where he appeared in a number of films. By 1920, his wife had divorced him and he was headed to the United States.
